Fall semester 2012 in Granada
span 395 IP Islamic Culture in Spain
The class is divided in two blocks that relate the most important aspects of the Hispanic-Muslim Civilization. Introduced in block one is the Arabic culture in general. The objectives of the course is centered so that the students are capable to be familiar with the reality of the Al-Andaluz to the political level, economy social and culture (Block two). The city of Granada is the core area where these aspects interrelate, and is dedicated to ambiance B to the Hispanic-Arab city, with a specific focus on Granada and the Alhambra.
Evidence: In-depth description of the two blocks, hard copy of final exam**
Course Reflective Narrative
This class was especially interesting because we were learning about the history in the city we were living, and could still see evidence of the Muslims everywhere. We could visit La Alhambra and visit the Albaicin, go to authentic arab baths. I like classes about culture and history and the islamic culture in spain is quite exotic.

SPAN 395 IP Literary Authors Granada (Winter course)
This course will accomplish two objectives
1) A specific study of a series of authors from Granada that highlights their importance; given that they share a historical period, school and trends with the majority of Spanish authors and are usually only known in a superficial way; some of them being at times the most important and famous of their group during that time period, inside and outside Spain.
2) To study the relation that said writers establish with Granada (the city and the province) en their work throughout the descriptions, opinions or traditions they deal with.
The course mainly includes the authors that have written their work in Spanish and therefore here they don't have room for the grand quantity of Arabic and Jewish writers that also cultivated the literature in the ancient Islamic reign of Granada because they use a different language of authors that are represented immediately after the conquest of Granada and of their annexation to Castilla and since this moment to the present.
Evidence: Hard copy, essay about the story "El Clavo" by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, short essay about Pedro Antonio de Alarcón
Reflective Narrative: This class was very beneficial and interesting because we learned about authors that had lived in Granada where we were living, and seeing it from their perspective. I enjoyed reading this literature, although it was difficult reading old Spanish, just as it would be difficult to read old English.

SPAN 395 IP Spanish Civilization & Culture
This course aims to explaining and studying the basic points considered to be the basis of Spanish
culture. Cultural aspects of different fields will be covered and interrelated, whenever possible. At
the same time a thorough and detailed study will be undertaken of the phenomena considered
universally to be genuinely Spanish. Course Content.
Evidence: Short essay about the youth in Granada
Reflective Narrative: This class and teacher Cristina Vara inspired my Capstone topic, The Culture and Marginalization of the Gypsies of Granada. I had seen the gypsies in Granada, trying to sell rosemary to the tourists walking by, grabbing our hands to read our palms. In this class our teacher taught us about the interesting history and culture about gypsies, but didn't go too in depth about the topic. Therefore, I decided to do my capstone about them when I learned we could do a culture study.

SPAN 395 IP Speaking & Writing Skills I
The course will be composed of a small number of students taught in sequences of 2 hours
daily and developed in parallel to the subject of grammar level 1.
It will serve mainly oral and written skills to achieve this level profile
Evidence: Grammar Practice, Practice formal letter in Spanish
Reflective Narrative
This course was the first class I took in Spain. We took a language level test a couple weeks prior to the beginning of this class and were then placed in the appropriate class. In this class I was always very nervous, because I felt at the time I didn't know the language very well. By the end of the semester, my Spanish improved a lot and I was thankful to take it and not have to go straight into the semester at the CLM with no practice or preparation.
