MLO 2: Language and Linguistic Knowledge
The student completes between two and six courses (depending on his or her choice of emphasis, as either language and linguistics knowledge or literary and cultural knowledge) related to the Spanish language and linguistics. These courses deal with: the sound system of Spanish, the history of Spanish, advanced grammar, Spanish-English translation, a general introduction to Spanish linguistics, Spanish for professional application (medical, legal, etc. spheres), composition and conversation.
Reflective Narrative
The requirements of MLO 2: Language and Linguistic Knowledge were completed through Spanish 315: Intro to Translation Spanish/English. This class really helped me to understand the basics to translation and interpretation, and the different origins and theories. In class, we translated many different types of work, and increased the difficulty of the type of work throughout the semester. For example, in the beginning we translated simple sentences and by the end we translated official documents and longer stories. For our final we had to translate 4,000 pages on our own and we could choose any material we wanted. This project was beneficial because I was able to understand how difficult it is to translate and capture the meaning the author intended, but in a different language.
