MLO 4: Secondary Cultural Knowledge
In addition to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, the student demonstrates a general knowledge of a socio-cultural group other than a Hispanic one or mainstream American culture. The student develops a basic understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) – of the second culture.
Course: Islamic Culture in Spain
To fulfill my secondary cultural knowledge MLO, I took Islamic Culture in Spain. This class was interesting because there is much Islamic influence, especially in Southern Spain and it is interesting to learn about the history of it. Muslims ruled Spain for a long time before they were conquered, and it is still evident today. I lived only about ten minutes away from the Islamic palace the Alhambra, and visiting it was much more enriching after taking that class. I also think that living in Spain was a secondary cultural knowledge, although it still pertains to the Spanish culture.
